Bury Cycle Speedway 30.03.08
Bury's opening to the season ended in disappointment, loosing both opening fixtures away to Hull. The visitors arrived short of several riders and not 100% match fit for an always tricky fixture. Liam Burke and Mikey Hewiitson gave Bury a great start in the Division 2 match racing to maximum points. The next 5 races were fiecely contested draws with Bury holding the lead thanks to wins from Hewittson, Simpson and Whiting. The home side heat back with 6 points in the 8th race and then 7 in a disasterous 9th to take a lead they sustained , winning 65-54 despite a last race fine win from Ash Simpson. Good scores from Hewittson, Simpson, with Whiting scoring 2 lasts after 2 wins.
M. Hewittson 11+1, A. Simpson 11 top scorers.
The Senior match looked tricky, even more so when Hull scored 7 points in race 1. Captain Neil Howarth was harshly excluded inrace 2, with Rothwell and Hewittson leving the 3rd. A gereat effort from Tom Doyle in race 4, an unlucky fall to Simpson in the 5th, and yet another harsh exclusion to Howarth in the 6th. Bury knew it wasn't going to be their day, going into the interval 36-51 to the home side. Bury steadied the ship by drawing 4 of the next 6 races, all the team fighting hard to score points. Heat 16 summed up the meeting, the Hull rider on grid 2 moved twice "unseen" by the referee, and Hull scored 7 points, further victories gave Hull a commanding 108-68 victory. Some great efforts from Doyle and Hewittson for little reward, good to see Jarman and Simpson competitive for 5 races each whilst John Milhandovic scored well in his senior debut. Whilst its always easy to blame the referee for a loss, there is no doubt that Bury lost over 15 points to the referee's poor decisions.
Top Scorers: M. Hewittson 11+1, F. Rothwell 9+2: T. Doyle 9+1.
