After the heroics at Walshaw Sports two weeks ago, Heys and new boss Peter Freakes came crashing back down to earth with a bump after this horror-show at home to Leigh Athletic last Saturday.

It was a match that never got going for Heys as they were well beaten by a team that are fast turning in to a ‘bogey’ side for the Sandgate Road outfit.

Heys had previously only won two of their last eight meetings and as soon as Latics took the lead on ten minutes from a corner, Heys never looked like stopping them making it nine.

‘Keeper Paul Hinchy parried a header from another corner 5 minutes later and was then relieved to see the follow up deflected over his crossbar.

The visitors sent another effort off target before Martin Love raced clean through only to be pulled back for an apparent offside.

The second half proved to be more of the same from Leigh who doubled their advantage on 50 minutes with a back-post header from a corner-kick on the left.

The only clear-cut chance for Heys fell to striker Chris Smithies just minutes later when his low-drive hit the inside of one post before rolling across the goal line and bouncing back to the ‘keeper off the other.

If it wasn’t already, the game was put well out of reach of Heys on the hour mark when Hinchy was dispossessed on the edge of his box allowing a forward a simple tap in to the empty net.

Heys now turn their attention to the visit of league leaders Gregorians on Saturday, Kick-off 2:30pm.

A maximum three points will need to be gained if Heys are to stand any chance of catching their title rivals.
